What degree do I need to be an addictions counselor? The minimum is a high school education diploma that is required by certain states or Providences. Some states have started requiring that you have a bachelor’s degree, however, this is to sign off on paperwork and bill insurance, you will need to check with the specific location.

Can I make money as an addiction counselor? Yes. Pay rates vary from job employment at a drug rehab to private practice. It depends on the degree, location, and workload. You can always go into private practice as well and do not have to accept insurance.

Do I need to be licensed as an addiction counselor? No, not in all areas. Some states like NJ, Colorado, Utah, and NY require that you obtain a license, other states like Florida and countries like Canada, United Kingdom, and some EU have a voluntary, nonaccredited certification board that you can opt to take the exam under, but you do not have to legally to practice.  Places like India and South America, Africa have no boards or governess.

How many educational hours do I need to sit for the addiction counselor exams? We provide 350 hours and most private nonprofit boards require 140 to 350, you would need to check in your local area.
