The Certified Sober Companion Training Program at The Addictions Academy is the most comprehensive training on the market and includes Safe Transport Training (sober escort from treatment and to and from appointments). This job function has been around for a very long time but up until now, there has been no real certification or training process for the people that provide these services and it was merely based on the honor system of years in recovery of a 12-step model of peer supports.

In recent years, we have seen a current rise in non-12-step treatment and that calls for more diversity in services that the addiction industry can provide for clients. In addition, a higher caliber of clientele requires a higher caliber of training. Most sober companions make between $300 to $2500 per day (a 24-hour span) for services. Clients that will pay this higher rate to expect high-quality education and training and value for services not just being drug to meetings and running life errands. The lower pay rate you can find at a lot of the companies offering sober support services as a pay structure for their staff.

With training as a sober coach or safe transport, you are able to take your ‘street knowledge’ and personal experience in the addiction recovery world and add some solid training behind your name to give you even more credibility in the addiction industry. In addition to gaining a wealth of new knowledge and understanding in the addiction process, you will also learn the ethical and legal side of companionship and transport. If you are toting clients around in your personal vehicle you need this class. We also cover legal aspects of this work, ethics, and more.

NOTE: There are NO prerequisites to this course. Also included is an ethics class and 10 hours of mentorship. We do offer Job Board, Networking, and Business/Private Practice assistance. We also hire from within once you are trained, certified, insured, and bonded.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sober Companions

A sober companion is an individual in long-term recovery from drugs and alcohol that helps another individual stay sober for a period of time. They can remain with the individual for 24 hours to 1 year and assist with events, work meetings, parties, shopping, exercise and cooking. They are usually in recovery but should be certified, insured and bonded.

If you work for a company like Hired Power, they pay $300 a day and charge around $1200 to the client. Other companies like The Addictions Coach and Sober Escorts pay $600 or more per day and if you work for yourself you can charge up to $2500 per day.

There is no state or federal requirement yet, but The Addictions Academy is the first to offer a certification course with exams and credentials to assist you in offering solid reputable services to your clients.

A sober escort is someone who transports an individual in early recovery from drugs and alcohol. They can drive them to 12-step meetings, to the grocery store, to events and to and from addiction treatment services.
