Certified Addictions Professional - Training



Certification as an Addiction Counselor comes with a specific amount of required training either by self-study or via live virtual classroom (webinar) and The Addictions Academy offers both. First you need to decide if you want to become a Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) or a Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC). The CAP requires a degree, the CAC does not.

The CAP, Certified Addiction Professional, must have more relevant work experience, must have a bachelor’s degree or higher and must take and pass both an FCB exam and an IC&RC exam. We provide all the training hours and education and the exam is conducted by the Florida Certification Board (FCB).

The CAP, Certified Addictions Professional Requires the following training hours:

Requirement: CAP applicants must complete and document a minimum of 350 hours of training, with a minimum number of training hours in each performance domain as follows:

  1. Clinical Evaluation: 35 hours
  2. Treatment Planning: 30 hours
  3. Counseling: 50 hours
  4. Case Management and Referral: 15 hours
  5. Client, Family and Community Education: 15 hours
  6. Documentation: 15 hours
  7. Ethical and Professional Responsibilities: 30 hours
  8. Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge: 80 hours
  9. Application to Practice/Profession 80 hours
