What is social media addiction?
Can people really be addicted to technology like their cell phones, laptops and Playstations/XBOX? Can this really be an addiction? Can this really be as destructive as alcohol, heroin, and cocaine? Well, this may surprise you but the answer is definitely YES! Maybe you yourself could possibly have signs and symptoms that you are spending too much time with your phone checking your Facebook account. Maybe you are familiar with the more intense symptoms like those that create and live an entire fake life through Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Social media addiction has gotten so obvious that restaurants are now putting a small box at the center of tables and encouraging customers to place their phones into the box while eating to also encourage customers to engage with each other and enjoy the dining experience instead of burying their heads into their phone screen to see who “liked” their latest post on Facebook.
Other more serious signs of social media addiction are happening among teens and the younger generation. These young social media addicts are isolating themselves and are becoming harder to interact with on a daily basis. Here is an example, have you noticed that the younger generation of social media addicts will only correspond by text when using the phone? They seldom pick up the phone and talk. It’s usually always through a text. Some may say this is from convenience but I say it is from losing their social skills due to too much time in social media fantasy land.
Don’t get me wrong, social media addiction isn’t just for the younger generation, older adults are getting sucked into social media addiction as well by Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter. In addition to work expecting the adult to always be checking their email and tending to work business. Adults are isolating themselves much like the younger generation.
